barrels signed by identified maki-e artists, each with later crafted cap, forepart and 18 carat gold medium nibs, length of pens approx 14.3cm, box dimensions 35cm x 25.3cm x 10.4cm. The large 'Seahorse' design, by the grade B maki-e artist Touho, born in Toyama in 1891. heightened in vibrant reds and blues, a small fish is incorporated in the design, with a mother of pearl eyes. The 'Goldfish' design, by the grade B maki-e artist Shuhou, born in Kanazawa in 1898. also incorporating the seahorse and fish design. The 'Praying Mantis' design, by the grade A maki-e artist Shuhou, born in Ishikawa in 1895. fine gold detailing. The small 'Seahorse' design, by the grade B maki-e artist Touho, born in Toyama in 1891. fine gold detailing. The iconic 'Grasshopper' design, by the grade A maki-e artist Shorin, born in Tokyo in 1883. heightened in reds. The 'Bird of Paradise' design, by the maki-e artist Ei, born in Satiama in 1902. Satiami died in 1963. the birds tail heightened in red, the tree flower further heightened with red speckles and mother of pearl. The 'Flying Fish' design, by the grade A maki-e artist Ritsuzan, born in Toyama in 1895. the fish coloured in blues and gold fin, over a stylised sea wave. The 'Colocynth Fruit' design, by the grade B maki-e artist Seika, born in Kanazawa in 1910. decorated with vibrant shades of orange and green. The 'Orchid' design, by the grade A maki-e artist Shogo, born Nigata in 1906. fine gold dusting and detailing. The unusual 'Pomegranate' design, by the grade A maki-e artist Kouho, born in Kyoto in 1889. Kouho died in 1970. rich gold effect, the fruit heightened with vibrant speckles of red, green and blue.
