DURANTE, CASTORE. Hortulus Sanitatis, Das ist Ein heylsam und nützliches Gährtlin de Gesundheit...in unsere hoch Teutsche Sprach versetzt durch Petrum Uffenbachium... Frankfurt: Hoffmann and Rhodius, 1609. 4to, 227 x 158 mm., contemporary German calf, spine blind-stamped, rebacked with original backstrip laid down; text browned throughout (heavy on some leaves), some dampstaining at end. First (and only) German edition of Durante's popular herbal, and the only non-Italian edition. Woodcut historiated title border and numerous woodcuts in text, ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Instead of the Durante woodcuts, the publishers substituted the Gesner/Camerarius blocks. Nissen BBI 570. Provenance : Early inscription on front flyleaf -- "P. Celestini Namayr, Prof. Lambacensis," inscription on title -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie; Horticultural Society of New York, bookplate.
