Leaves 1/4-39/7 with printed foliation I-CCLXXII. 47 lines and headline, double column. Types: 1:160G (title, headlines, etc.), 2:99 aG(91) (smaller headings), 3:99 bG(91) (text). Two- to eight-line initial spaces. Illuminated border by a French artist to outer margin of 1/4r, consisting of violets and carnations in blue and burnished silver on green stems against a brown background, in the center a skull in burnished silver surrounded by a banderole in liquid gold with the motto Memorare novissima ; nine large illuminated initials in liquid gold, burnished silver, and colors, one (1/5v) incorporating a skull with the legend Memorare , the others in leafy or floral patterns or formed of twigs; rubricated with alternately red and blue Lombard initials and paragraph signs; capitals filled with yellow. Traces of manuscript quiring in lower right corners in the first half of each quire. (The silver and the rubricator's red ink oxydized, faint dampstain to lower outer corners in second half of book, small piece ca. 1 inch square clipped from blank margin of 1/2, small burn-hole to fol. 192 touching three words recto and verso, several small wormholes to first ca. 30 leaves catching a few letters on each page.) Original bare oak boards (some small wormholes), new brown calf spine, evidence of two clasps, preserving the original pastedowns and flyleaves; folding cloth case. It is still regarded as an authority on the liturgy of the later Middle Ages and as a guide to the symbolism of rites and vestments.
