DURHAM COUNTY ELECTIONS -- GARRET, William. A Collection of Papers, Speeches, &c. &c. delivered at The Durham County Election in 1820. Newcastle upon Tyne, 1820, 2 vols., 4°, approximately 340 broadsides, posters, squibs autograph letters, a hand coloured engraved map, a watercolour portrait of John George Lambton and 3 silk hat bands, all mounted or tipped in on guards, mid 19th century half morocco, gilt. John George Lambton, later Earl of Durham (1792-1840) was first elected to the House of Commons as representing Durham in 1813 for the Whig interest. In a public meeting held at Durham on the 21st of October 1819 he denounced the government for its part in the Peterloo massacre. In the election that followed in March 1820, his contestants were William Powlett and Richard Wharton, and from the contest a fair amount of acrimonious banter was produced throughout. Lambton was re-elected to the seat but not without fighting a dual with T. W. Beaumont after a personal attack upon him in the Northumberland elections. [DNB] (2)
