Dutch School (probably late 16th century) Animal studies (recto and verso), including a pheasant, turkey, cockerel, rabbit, hedgehog, poodle, goat, horse, lions, bear, and a fire salamander, pen and brown ink, some in pen and black ink, on laid paper without watermark, annotation in Dutch on verso reads 'Swarz mit gold[...?] Salamander', c. 100 x 150 mm. (3 7/8 x 5 7/8 in), surface dirt and ink stains, browning, and light finger-soiling, framed and glazed. Provenance: Sir John Clement Witt [L.2228b]; Thence by descent ⁂ The mount of the present work bears a suggested attribution to Augustin Hirschvogel (1503-1553), but the studies appear to be after woodcuts by Hans Weiditz the Younger (ca. 1495-1537), or "The Petrarch Master".
