Egbert Van Heemskerck (1634-was a Dutch painter who worked in Haarlem, heavily influenced by the peasant scenes by Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen Van Ostade In the early he moved to London, where he found a new market for genre paintings. In its rendering and diagonal strokes for shadows and volume, the present sheet shows some affinity with the drawing of a pipe smoking peasant, in the Graphische Sammlung im Städelschen Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt am Main (inv. 3548).
