Lot of 8. Glenn Curtiss and the Beginnings of Naval Aviation Seven years after the Wright brothers made history at Kitty Hawk, Glenn Curtiss, in 1910, made arrangements with the U.S. Navy to demonstrate a shipboard takeoff and a shipboard landing with a Curtiss Pusher aeroplane -- the beginnings of Naval Aviation (and Glenn Curtiss as the Father of Naval Aviation). The takeoff took place on November 14, 1910, from a platform on the USS Birmingham anchored at Hampton Roads, VA, Curtiss Exhibition Team aviator Eugene Ely piloting the aeroplane. The main event -- the shipboard landing -- took place two months later on January 18, 1911. Curtiss aviator Eugene Ely again piloting the aeroplane, now to that historic landing. These six large-format U.S. Navy photographs picture aviator Ely with his Curtiss Pusher aeroplane flying the approach and arrested landing to a 120 foot platform aboard the USS Pennsylvania anchored in San Francisco Bay. Images of Naval Aviation in the making -- the first ever shipboard landing. USS Pennsylvania Gunnery Officer, Rufus Fairchild Zogbaum Jr., had been placed in charge of the operation. "You are to take charge, Zogbaum, and make all arrangements" -- Ship's Captain Charles Pond. Zogbaum's autobiography, From Sail to Saratoga, a Naval Autobiography, accompanies the six large-format photographs, together with a 10 x 8 in. photograph of now Admiral Zogbaum, and party, in full regalia. Curtiss aviator Eugene Ely landed his Curtiss Pusher on a platform constructed on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay. A trapped tailhook landing -- arrested by ropes tied to sandbags. Six photos: five photos of the approach and landing, one head-on photo of the aircraft parked at the end of its landing run. Captions have been stamped on the reverse of the photos, but faded, essentially only one being readable. They're also stamped OFFICIAL U.S. NAVY PHOTOGRAPH (RELEASED). A readable release date on the reverse of one of the photos reads, 18 Jan. 1951. Hand written on the reverse of one of the photos is: Property of Captain Zogbaum USA Please return. The photographs were purchased in a Phoenix area antique shop several years ago. The sales slip states: "From estate of Rufus Zogbaum, Jr."
