EARLY DRAFT OF SCREENPLAY. Mimeographed Manuscript, 160 pp, 4to, n.p., n.d., being an early draft of the screenplay for the John Ford/John Wayne classic Fort Apache, here titled War Party, annotated throughout in pen and pencil by [?], pages toned and thumbed, edges bumped, bound together with three brass brads at left margin, housed in custom black morocco clamshell box, gilt lettered and decorated spine. Fort Apache is the first and arguably the best film in John Ford's "Cavalry trilogy" (the others being She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. Based on a story by James Warner Bellah, the film stars John Wayne as crusty captain Kirby York and Henry Fonda as the Custer-like commanding officer whose eagerness to battle the Apaches ends in disaster. The screenplay for Fort Apache was written by Frank S. Nugent, John Ford's collaborator on several of his finest films, including The Quiet Man and The Searchers. This screenplay is an early draft featuring a variant title, and though the main components of the story are present, it is much wordier than the final product (Nugent often complained about how Ford was merciless when cutting dialogue.) Annotations reflect changes in character names, scene tightening, consistency, and punctuation.
