Title: Early ephemera of a Black folk singer at San Francisco's famous "hungry i" Club Author: Place: Publisher: Date: ca. 1952 Description: Two photographic postcards for Black folk guitarist Stan Wilson’s performance at the “hungry i” Club, San Francisco (undated, ca. 1952) 3.5 x 5.5”. Photos of Wilson by “Ashworth of London”. All ephemera from the early years of the legendary North Beach Club are rare and this African-American association is especially noteworthy. Wilson’s was the premiere performance after Enrico Banducci moved his Club to Columbus Avenue and began nightly entertainment. At the time, the Club was so little known that one of the postcards announced Wilson's performance of “ballads, calypso and blues” as the “Hungry Inn Club”. In years to come, the North Beach venue would become world-famous, helping to launch the careers of Woody Allen Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Yarborough, Dick Cavett, the Kingston Trio, Bill Cosby and many other comedians and singers.
