Early German editions of the 4 major parts of Gesner's famous encyclopedia ("Schlangenbuch" first, "Fischbuch" second and the 2 others third edition). - With 4 woodcuts on title and ca. 1000 woodcuts in text. Contemp. pigskin over wooden boards, richly blind- and rollstamped. - Margins partly somewhat waterstained, 1 leave with corner torn off (minim. loss of letters). Binding rubbed, covering at edges partly damaged, 1 movable part of clasps removed. Altogether fine and clean copy. Vogel-, Thier-, Fisch- und Schlangenbuch, 1575-89.

Ausgabe. - Gut erhaltener Sammelband mit den vier selbständig erschienenen Hauptteilen von Gesners berühmter Enzyklopädie, darunter auch das seltene Schlangenbuch. "An encyclopaedia of contemporary knowledge , intended to replace not only medieval compilations but even Aristotle's work of the same title .. It was many times reprinted and although it often suffered at the hands of editors, it remained the standard reference book even as late as Linné and beyond, because neither Linné nor Ray included illustrations." (PMM 77). - Unter den schönen Holzschnitten stammt die stilisierte Rhinozeros-Darstellung von Albrecht Dürer . "Gesner selbst nennt auch Dürer noch einmal als Verfertiger, fernerhin die beiden Züricher Künstler Hans Asper und Johann Thomas, für einige Vogelbilder Lukas Schrön" (Ley S. 90). Des weiteren übernahm er eine große Zahl aus den textlichen Quellen, so aus Olaus Magnus Belone und Rondelet. - Kollation: 6 nn., 261 röm. num. Bll., 1 w. Bl.; 4 nn., 172 röm. num. Bll.; 6 nn., 202 röm. num. Bll.; 4 nn., 72 röm. num. Bll. - Im Randbereich tls. leicht wasserrandig, 1 Bl. mit Eckausriß (ergänzt; geringfüg. Buchstabenverlust). Einbd. berieben, Bezug an den Kanten tlw. mit Läsuren, 1 bewegl. Schließenelement entfernt. Insgesamt sehr schönes sauberes Exemplar.
