Beschreibung:

Charley, A Slave Boy From New Orleans carte de visite, imprinted on verso with 1864 copyright to S. Tackaberry, photo credit to Charles Paxson of New York, and the appeal: The nett proceeds from the sale of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of colored people in the department of the Gulf, now under the command of Maj. Gen. Banks. This carte is No. 3 in a series of art least six made by Paxson and Tackaberry and sold by the National Freedman's Association in 1864 and 1865 in order to garner the support of Northern whites who had no sympathy for black slaves, but were shocked and outraged at the sight of white slaves. Charley and the other subjects appear in other photographs and periodical articles of this time and are described as the immoral offspring of a slave-owner and one of his light-complexioned slaves, who was probably born in the same manner. Provenance: From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan Condition: Light soiling, edge wear, and a light stain at lower right.
