Ebersolt J., “Sanctuaires de Byzance ou Recherches sur les Anciens tresors des Eglises de Constantinople”, Paris 1921. First edition. 4to, 25x17cm, contemporary leather over boards, spine faded, text clean, complete 158p. and 24 illustrations. A very good copy. Ebersolt, a leading Byzantinist, was able to study, for the first time, the fine Byzantine churches of Constantinople, during the Allied occupation of the city in 1919. Although Thessaloniki’s churches were extensively described by Diehl, Saladin and Tourneau, the Constantinople Churches were (and are still) mosques, with all relevant obstacles in their scientific evaluation. Although these obstacles, Ebersolt’ s scientific account is among one of the best and more accurate for their hidden treasures.
