(Title spotted and with slight tears and marks at inner margin.) Early 20th-century brown half calf. Provenance : C.F.G.R. Schwerdt (bookplate; his sale, 22 May 1939, part lot 488). SCHWERDT COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION. NO COPY IN BL. Edie's treatise was subsequently published under the title of The Art of English Shooting . ESTC locates only one copy of the first edition (John Rylands Library, Manchester University). Chute 192 emphasises its importance as: 'the first book solely on guns and game: on how to shoot it, as well as concise information on the fowling-piece, powder, shot and flints ... very rare'; Schwerdt I, p. 158. PAGE, T[homas] (b. 1713)]. The Art of Shooting Flying familiarly explain'd by way of dialogue . Norwich: printed J. Crouse and sold by the author, T. Page, 1766. 8° (193 x 116mm), 44 [2]p. (Title a little stained and with slight internal tear, old sewing marks, tear to end advertisement leaf affecting catch-word.) Recent calf-backed marbled boards. FIRST EDITION OF 'THE FIRST BOOK IN PROSE SOLELY ON SHOOTING'. NO COPY IN BL. ESTC locates 2 copies only (Bodleian and Library of Congress). Chute 493: ' very rare'; Schwerdt II, p. 58: 'a little tract published by a gun and watch maker in Norwich'. (2)
