Edward Martingdale Richardson, ANWS (British, 1810-1874) Mont Orgueil, from Petit Portelet, Jersey watercolour heightened with white, signed and dated 1864, original English, mid 19th century, ornate gilded exhibition frame with some losses 15 x 36in. (38 x 98.5cm.) * Provenance: By direct descent from Henry Austin Dobson LLD (1840-1921) who, in 1864, won this watercolour as a prize at the South Kensington Art School. Dobson was a distinguished poet, author and biographer. ** Notes: One of a distinguished family of painters, Edward Richardson was the second son of the watercolourist Thomas Miles Richardson (1784-1848) and the brother of Thomas Miles Richardson the Younger (1813-1890). He exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours of which he became an Associate in 1859. He painted mainly landscapes and coastal views in the British Isles and travelled in Europe. A sale of his watercolours was held at Christie's on 19th February 1864. Following his death in 1874 the contents of his studio were sold at Christie's on 25th May 1875. Collections: Victoria and Albert Museum; Manchester City Art Gallery; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; Newport Art Gallery and Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead. * Condition: Evidence of light toning of the paper and some fading. Losses to frame.
