EGLOFF, Proffessor J.M. A brass Armillary sphere, Solothurn [19th century]. A fine lacquered brass armillary sphere, diameter 14 inches (355mm), overall height 26 inches (660mm), the meridian circle engraved in four quadrants, the ecliptic with scale divided 0-36 (0-360 degrees), the circular plate engraved on the rim with a calendar scale, the centre-plate decorated with a zodiac, the signs printed in black on a white ground, the plate pierce every 5 degrees, the underside similarly marked, the centre comprising a gilded hemisphere arranged over a wooden earth-ball coloured red, green and white, and mounted so as to allow the use of both the Ptolemaic or Copernican systems. The sphere mounted on a central metal axis to a brass half crescent, and mounted on a baluster turned pillar and stand, makers name engraved on brass plate on the upper side of the circular plate.
