He enlisted into the Royal Marines at Liverpool on 10 August 1881. He served in the Sudan campaign of 1884 and was present at the battle of El Teb, 29 February 1884. Private Carter was invalided from the Royal Marines on 7 October 1890. With copied service paper and roll extracts.
