Gill was Master of the transport Catalonia which left Portsmouth on 3 August 1882, carrying 48 officers, 825 warrant officers and men, and 100 horses, and arrived at Alexandria on 17 August. The troops comprised the General of the 2nd Division, 4th Brigade Staff, and the 1st Battalion, Royal West Kents. Only commanders of transports received the 1882 medal making them unique to each of the 105 vessels employed.
