Very fine condition. Provenance From an old British private collection; formed between 1975 and 1985. Footnotes The lotus was one of the most popular flowers in ancient Egypt and can be seen decorating people of all social standing on tomb paintings and other reliefs, as well as being associated with the gods. Fresh flowers were worn tucked in the hair at festivals, and collars made from the petals, leaves and seeds were common for both the living and the dead. The sweet fragrance of the flower was not only pleasing but was believed to have purifying qualities. The lotus was associated with the sun god who was believed to rise from the waters of chaos as a child at the beginning of time, seated on a lotus flower.
