EGYPTIAN RA-HORAKHTY WITH MA'AT FEATHER Third Intermediate- Late Period, 1069-332 BC A flat-section silver plaque of the god Ra-Horakhty in profile with sun-disc resting above his head, arm extended holding the ma'at feather of judgement; mounted on a custom-made stand. 115 grams, 89mm (3 1/2"). Condition Very fine condition. Provenance Property of a Connecticut, USA, collector; formerly in the J. H. H. Claessen collection, Bladel, Netherlands; a collection he formed before 1980. Footnotes In early times Ra possessed a cult centre at On, known to the Greeks as Heliopolis, in the north of Egypt. His cult took on many aspects of that of Horus, the divine child of Osiris and Isis, and one of these was the form of Horakhty, meaning 'Horus of the Horizon', the rising sun, and adopted from him the falcon head on his own human body. Ra also became associated with other deities, such as Amun, the state god who rose to prominence during the New Kingdom. Ra was believed to cross the celestial ocean in his barque accompanied by his vizier Thoth, and his daughter Maat, the embodiment of cosmic order.
