Eight large fragments from a Romanesque Passional, in Latin, manuscript on parchment [Italy (perhaps Tuscany), first half of twelfth century] 8 near-complete leaves, each recovered from a binding and bound together, each with remains of double column of 34 lines of large and elegant Romanesque script, without biting curves, but with a pronounced st-ligature and a tongued e, simple penwork capitals, red rubric, simple red initials (one with blank parchment decoration within its body), first leaf with a large initial in split yellow bars, containing coloured geometric patterns, enclosing scrolling foliage terminating in a coloured flower, all on blue, yellow and green grounds within red penwork frame, leaves scrubbed blank on reverse, folded over at top and bottom with losses and holes there, parchment brittle in places with first leaf nearly separated from volume, overall fair condition, each leaf: 400 by 280mm.; bound in modern pasteboards with leather spine, torn edges, corners bumped From the modern collection of Rudolf Graupner: his mid-twentieth-century bookplate.
