Beschreibung:

The Unity of Islamic Art, King Faisal Centre for Research and Islamic Studies, Kent 1985, S. [28]-29, Nr. 11). Koran. – Single leaf with texts from the Koran from a Maghreb manuscript on vellum. North Africa, probably 12th/13th century. Oblong quarto (17,7 x 23 cm). Handwriting in brown ink with diacritical signs in blue, green and red. 5 lines (text layout: ca. 13 x 14,5 cm). – The leaf is written in typical Maghreb style, as it was common in North Africa since about the 10th century. The characteristic style can already be found in this form, fully developed, in the 11th century. It was still popular in North Africa till the High and Late Middle Ages (13th/14th century), in variants also in Andalusia. An unusual aspect of our leaf is however the quarto format, as it was usual in the early Korans written in Kufic before and around the turn of the millenium. The Maghreb manuscripts, however, are usually in a square or vertical format. Insofar there is evidence that our leaf come from a manuscript still in the tradition of quarto Korans, thus it can be dated in the 11th or 12th century, but certainly not after 1200. – Margins with small breaks and crease marks; here and there stronger browned and soiled, few, small holes in margin.
