EISENHOWER, Dwight D. (1890-1969), President . Photograph signed ("Dwight D. Eisenhower"), an Associated Press photo of American soldiers marching through Paris, n.p., [August 1944]. 8 x 9 15/16 in., two minor marks in the left and right margins, tipped to a board, Associated Press stamps on verso , otherwise in fine condition. THE LIBERATION OF PARIS: A EXCEPTIONAL WORLD WAR II IMAGE, BOLDLY SIGNED BY THE ALLIED COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF Two months of bitter, costly fighting were required, after the long-awaited Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, to bring the Allied armies to Paris. On August 25, German General Cholitz surrendered Paris to a French armored division, saving it from the wholesale, deliberate destruction ordered by Hitler. "Rapturous demonstrations broke out in the city punctuated by a chorus of church bells that proclaimed deliverance from France's long night" (Eisenhower, David. Eisenhower at War , p. 425). At the request of De Gaulle, an Allied show of force--a march down the Champs d'Elysses--was organized for 29 August. This historic photograph depicts soldiers of the 28th Infantry Division (the "Keystone" Division, which later bore the brunt of the Nazi counterattack in the Battle of the Bulge), marching through the Arc de Triomphe, which looms in the background. Eisnhower has signed boldly, in full, in the light area of the sky.
