In the 1920s Japanese cinema saw the flourishing of films with a Marxist agenda known collectively as Kaiko-Eiga. These were suppressed by the state but one, Suzuki's 'Nani Gakanojo Wo So Saretaka' (1930), became the highest grossing Japanese silent film.
