Sixth plate daguerreotype of Eliza Ada Earle Hacker wearing a bonnet, a shawl, and gloves, with manuscript paper label attached to lining of case identifying Hacker as mother of Sarah Earle Hacker, with her birth and death dates, b. June 8, 1807/ d. May 23, 1846. Mat stamped Plumbe lower right. Housed in full case. Eliza Earle Hacker, born in Leicester, MA, into an affluent and literary Quaker family, served as principal of the Mulberry Grove Boarding School in Leicester from 1831-1839. Hacker later moved to Philadelphia, PA in 1839, presumably to marry William E. Hacker. While in Philadelphia, she contributed several articles to publications under the pseudonym Ada, a pseudonym she shared with African American abolitionist and poet Sarah Forten. Hacker also wrote poetry that promoted the anti-slavery cause, which was featured in publications such as the Liberator, the Pennsylvania Freeman, and the Massachusetts Spy. Hacker died on May 23, 1846, in Philadelphia at the age of 38. Condition: Housed in full case; scattered spots on mat.
