ELLIOT (Daniel Giraud): THE NEW AND HERETOFORE UNFIGURED SPECIES OF THE BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, New York, by the author, [1866-] 1869 FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., elephant folio (610 x 470mm.), list of subscribers, lists of plates, 21 mounted engraved illustrations by W.J. Linton in the text and 72 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES after Elliot, J. Wolf and E. Sheppard by Bowen & Co. and C.F. Tholey and an additional plate of Parus Occidentalis after Elliot bound at the beginning of vol. I (plate of Baird's Cormorant , vol. II, torn across the centre and neatly repaired), contemporary green half morcco gilt, t.e.g. ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES PRINTED, most of which were sold to subscribers; only 71 names appear on the original subscribers list. This fine work describes and illustrates life-size the birds which are not included in the works of Audubon or Wilson. The additional plate, though mentioned in the list of plates, is not assigned a plate number and instead given the note See Introduction . Although this plate has been recorded in other copies offered at auction, none of the cited bibliographies call for it, or even mention it.
