An archive of prints, photographs and ephemera relating to Ellsworth (1837-1861), friend of President Lincoln, organizer of Zoaves and the first commissioned officer to die in the Civil War. Boston, 1861 -- Mourning badge with printed portrait at center. 68 mm. (2 in.), black crepe cockade, red, white, and blue ribbons, slight wear -- and five patriotic envelopes with portraits of Ellsworth, one color. Ellsworth studied law in Lincoln's firm, organized the Chicago Zouave Cadets, and later the New York Fire Zoaves, whose elaborate uniforms derived from French colonial regimental dress. Ellsworth was invited to accompany Lincoln to Washington for his inauguration. On 24 May 1861 Ellsworth removed the Confederate Flag from the roof of the Marshall House Tavern in Alexandria and was promptly gunned down by the proprietor, who was in turn killed by a Union private with Ellsworth. Ellsworth's body lay in state at the White House and his image became a potent symbol to the Northern cause.
