Title: Emigre: A Magazine for Exiles / The Magazine That Ignores Boundaries, issues 1-8 Author: VanderLans, Rudy, editor Place: Berkeley Publisher: Emigre Graphics Date: 1984-1987 Description: 8 volumes. Various paginations (about 32 pp. each). Illustrated throughout with artwork and from photographs. (Folio), 45x29 cm (17x11.5"), original stapled decorative wrappers, housed together in a custom cloth wraparound case. First Editions. All volumes with a variety of illustrations, graphics, distinctive typography, stories, poems, etc. No. 3 with large pull-out poster. No. 6 is in 3 parts as issued, though lacking the plain cardboard box and the letterpress printed fan by Susan E. King. The first issue with an accompanying letter from publisher Rudy VanderLans to Julie Curtiss at Black Sparrow Press gifting the first 2 issues and asking permission to publish John Fante's "The Odyssey of a Wop" in the 3rd issue. Fante's story does indeed appear in Emigre No. 3. The 8th issue, featuring a poem by Charles Bukowski, also has a letter from VanderLans to Black Sparrow Press publisher John Martin thanking him for his support of Emigre. "The focus of Emigre is on the unique perspective of contemporary writers, poets, journalists, graphic designers, photographers, architects and artists who live or have lived outside their native countries." - from the publisher's website. The magazine ran for a total of 69 issues, from 1984-2005. Early issues are quite scarce. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear; all issues about near fine or better. Item number: 280952
