ENGLISH DIVINES. A VICTORIAN AUTOGRAPH ALBUM OF AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, DOCUMENTS AND SIGNED PIECES, 17TH - LATE 19TH C, PRIMATES AND DIOCESAN, BISHOPS, AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED including: (Canterbury) John Potter, Charles Manners Sutton, William Howley, Archibald Campbell Tait, Edward White Benson (York) John Sharp (to the antiquarian Ralph Thoresby on the siege coinage of Charles I), Thomas Musgrave, William Thomson (Diocesan) Shute Barrington, Edward Fowler, James Gardiner, Edmund Gibson and about 135 others, 195 SIGNED PIECES including free fronts, 200 18th and 19th c ENGRAVINGS including mezzotint portraits, cathedrals and antiquities and 55 CARTES DE VISITES, mostly captioned in a neat hand laid down on stout leaves (36 x 26cm) with handwritten title and dedication Autographs of bishops of the Church of England and other eminent divines etc illustrated with engravings collected by Isabella Thornhill (1875/Revd Rowley Hill MA, Vicar of Sheffield from a friend 1876, embossed dark brown calf slightly worn, aeg and another, the letterS and signatures of English, Scottish and Irish Deans including those of Henry George Liddell (father of Alice), Arthur Penrhyn Stanley and about 45 others, 43 engravings, photographs, mainly albumen prints of cathedrals (117) and carte des visites or other portraits (58) laid down in a scrap book, red, blue and gilt patterned boards, leaves browned and loose (2) Provenance: The Right Reverend Rowley Hill, DD, Bishop of Sodor and Man (1836-1887); thence by family descent to the present owners The first album was assembled by Isabella Thornhill, nee Gell, subsequently Thornhill-Gell (1806-1878) of Stanton Hall near Bakewell, Derbyshire. She married, in 1828 William Pole Thornhill (1807-1876) and died without issue. Her diary is in Derby Record Office
