ENORMOUS ILLUMINATED INITIAL "H", on a leaf from a MANUSCRIPT CHOIR BOOK ON VELLUM [Spain? circa 1400] Leaf 570x397mm, initial 235x230mm, pink on blue ground with scrolling white tracery, within a burnished gold surround and lush coloured leafy extensions along the whole length of the page. Infilled with a mass of orange, pink and blue flowers on green stems. An inner yellow surround is probably a later addition (minor flaking, some small unobtrusive holes). 4 lines of text, a red rubric, in a large gothic rotunda. The leaf is evidently unfinished, breaking off after one 4-line stave of music with square notation in gold below the initial. The lowest line of the stave seems to have been erased. Below that the name 'Elisabet' has been written in large calligraphic capitals in blue and red, this is evidently a later addition. The verso is blank The initial introduces the Antiphon to Vespers on the eve of the feast of St.John the Baptist from the Common of the Saints (24 June), ' Helisabet Zacharies Magnum '
