Circumcision Set. A magnificent set of circumcision tools in its original box. It contains: a knife, Mogen or clamp, powder dish and small bowl. U.S.A. late 19th/early 20th century. Engraved silver with sculpted agate. Hallmarks: Sterling silver. Also has engraved inscription: THE METCALF which indicates that it came from a New York manufacturer active 1885-1920. The lid of the case is inlaid with an agate with a Hebrew inscription: The small bowl is in agate and it is engraved with a circumcision scene. The powder dish is also in engraved agate and bears a Hebrew inscription that is often found on amulets destined to protect the newly born. The Covenant of Abraham/The Holy Convenant/Amen, and so it shall be/By your deliverence I hope/By your blood, you will live. The circumcision of an 8-day baby boy is the symbol of the covenant with God and his entry into the jewish Community. Much care and research is traditionally given to objects that are used in circumcision. This is the case for this set that mixes both agate and silver. The need for blessings and protection bears witness to the Jews' religiousness during this surgical act and to the medical care (as evidenced by the powder bottle) placing the child under God's protection.
