Enzo Plazzotta (Italian 1921 - 1981) Conversation Bronze, numbered from an edition of 9 187cms high, 105cms wide by 78cms deep On view at: The Sculpture Park Enzo Plazzottawasborn in Mestre, near Venice, and studied sculpture at the Accademia di Brera in Milan under the tuition of Giacomo Manzù until his studies were interrupted by World War II, when he became a Partisan leader near Lago Maggiore. After the warPlazzotta took up sculpture again and was commissioned by the Italian Committee of Liberation to commemorate their successful collaboration with the British Special Forces. This assignment would mark a turning point in his career, for after visiting London to present the commissioned statuette in person, he decided to make the city his home. Though he would spend most of his career as a sculptor in the UK, he maintained a strong connection with his home country, retaining a studio in the Tuscan city of Pietrasanta. Establishing himself quickly as a portrait sculptor, Plazzotta was fascinated by the human form. His studio was frequented by dancers, including Nureyev, Fonteyn, Sibley and Dowell. His affinity with dance and ballet is illustrated by several public works around London, such as the ballerina who sits beside the Royal Opera House, and the leaping figure in Jetée on the Thames Embankment. The present works are examples of Plazzottas fascination with the female body in particular.
