ERASMUS, Desiderius (?1466-1536). The First [ Second ] Tome or Volume of the Paraphrases of Erasmus upon the Newe Testament. [London: Edwarde Whitchurche], 1551-[49]. 2 volumes, 4° (283 x 200mm, 279 x 185mm). Title within woodcut border with an early woodcut portrait of Erasmus laid down on verso, black letter, woodcut initials, woodcut illustration on verso of final leaf (vol.II lacks title but supplied in manuscript, ?severall epistles of vol. I lacking, some mainly marginal staining and browning in vol. I, vol.II with some marginal worming at the front and more general scattered worming towards the end, small rusthole in D6, stain to aav affecting an initial, blank corner of 4B2 torn away, hole in 4F1 which is also browned, corner of 3C5 torn away affecting a few letters, a few leaves lightly browned ). Not-uniformly bound in contemporary calf (rather worn, joints split but cords holding, scuffed and scratched, spine label of vol. I detaching). Provenance : Thomas Willoughby, 1668 (signature on title of vol.I); E. L. Lushington (signature on front free endpaper of vol.I); Paul Howard Beves (ex-libris sticker in both vols.); early annotation on final leaf in vol.II; John Belp, 1764 & Ed. Lushington (signatures on front free endpaper of vol.II). cf. Herbert 72; STC 2866 & 2854.7. Mixed edition. The year of publication on the title of volume I suggests this volume is a second edition yet it does not collate as such with Herbert. "No doubt, owing to the demand for copies at an early date, several presses were employed at the same time, and the work of printing was pushed on as rapidly as possible. Some copies are mixed" (Herbert). For this reason this copy is sold not subject to return. (2)
