ERNEST ARTHUR HODGKINSON (BRITISH, BORN 1883), Manuscript album, cover title MY HOLIDAY IN NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK 1906, containing finely executed manuscript pen, ink and watercolour title page + 29 leaves of finely executed manuscript pen, ink and watercolour illustrations depicting Lowestoft harbour; Norwich Cathedral; the beach at Southwold; River Blyth, Southwold; Kessingland Beach; Walberswick Village; Creake Ferry; Beccles; an old mill near Yarmouth; Irstead; River Ant evening; St Benet’s Abbey; Horning Broad; Blythburgh; St Olaves; Acle Regatta etc etc, each painting captioned in pen and ink, divisional pen, ink and watercolour decorative illustrated title pages for Lowestoft, Norwich, Southwold, Walberswick, Yarmouth and the Broads, two of the leaves with Broadland paintings with four smaller paintings to one leaf, each bordered and captioned, front paste down neatly signed and inscribed “Ernest A Hodgkinson, Nottingham 1906” with small portrait pen and ink illustration bordered and captioned “The Skipper on the Queen-o’ the Broads”, oblong, buckram backed burgundy cloth gilt with author and title in gilt to top board, together with another album by the same artist: THIS SIDE OF THE NORTH SEA AND THE OTHER, dated 1929 with manuscript pen, ink and watercolour pictorial title page + 53 manuscript numbered pages of finely executed pen and ink drawings (of which two pen, ink and watercolour), each bordered and captioned and each with corresponding page of manuscript pen and ink letterpress, leaf following title page with manuscript pen and ink introduction “the similarity between some of the physical characteristics of the Eastern counties of England and those of the Netherlands, and the possession of a number of sketchbooks filled during many many peregrinations through the Eastern counties, and three holidays in Holland, provide some form of excuse for the medley of drawings in the following pages… EAH… Bowden, Cheshire 1929, drawings include River Ant, Norfolk; comparison of Nayland Essex and Owerkerk Island of Schowen; the lighthouse tower at West Capelle; the Church at Boston in Holland Lincs; Boxford Suffolk; the Monstertoren Zierikzee; Middleburg; Norfolk windmills; Dutch windmills; comparison between hay boats on the East Scheldt and on the Blackwater, Essex; Mersea Island Essex; on the Suffolk Broads; Kings Lynn; Wroxham and Acle Norfolk; Veere Holland; Worstead Norfolk; Dordrecht etc etc”, oblong, contemporary grained morocco binding, ruled and titled in gilt by Cox & Allen of Cambridge, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt (2)
