London: John Murray 1853. 8vo (216x133 mm). 4 tinted lithographs and 3 wood-engraved plates, 1 folding engraved map, numerous illustrations. Early brown polished calf by Hodgson, covers ruled in gilt and blind, spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Condition: front free endpaper detached, 20th century ink inscription to front free fly paper, foxing principally to the plates and title, spine lightly rubbed. Provenance: Armorial bookplate. first edition. “Captain Erskine, in 1849, sailed from Russell, New Zealand, and reached Niue or Savage Island. He visited Manua, Tutuila, and Upolu of the Samoan Islands. Next, Vavau, Lifuka, and Tongatabu were visited, then Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and Port Jackson” ( Hill ). Hill 568.
