essay 1 lb.- 100 lbs. 1868 Issue Tobacco, essays, eleven different bi-color models produced for the initial Tobacco stamp contract of 1868 by the National Bank Note Co. (the set includes a Manufactured Tobacco for Exportation model), each with sepia photograph of a tobacco plant affixed as a vignette within elaborate engraved frames in various colors, 3, 20, 40 and 60 lbs. designs with the denominations added in China white, mounted on heavy cards (8½ x 4½"), each card with 'NBN Co. Sep 19, 1868' double circle h.s., the contract was awarded to the Continental Bank Note Co. (see lots 741-49) for the essays and proofs of Continental's very artistic designs) and the first tobacco stamps appeared in Nov. of 1868, a few have minor flaws, very fine , a unique and historical set from the official records for the initial contract. est.
