ETIENNE, Claude Saint (17th-century)]. Nouvelle instruction pour connoistre les bons fruits...Par le R.P Dom C.S.E . Paris: Charles de Sercy, 1670. First edition “published according to de Sercy’s custom without full recognition of the author’s name. The edition of 1678 however gives Etienne’s name on the title page” (Hunt). Claude Saint Etienne was a French gardener and a Monk of the order of St. Bernard. Very rare: no records in ABPC nor online auction records . 12mo (137 x 80 mm). (Pale dampstain on a few leaves, R2 with 1-inch tear crossing a few letters.) Contemporary vellum, spine with morocco gilt lettering-piece (some light wear and browning.) Provenance : P. G. Wright (signature and note dated Dec. 9 1723 on verso of flyleaf); unidentified armorial bookplate on paste-down. Hunt 315.
