(mal chiffrés 144), et le dernier blanc, dont le titre imprimé en rouge et noir, 2 ff. d'épîtres et épigramme, 129 figures gravées sur bois dans les marges, nombreuses lettrines ornées. Collation a10 b-s8; vélin ivoire (reliure du XIXe siècle), étui moderne en toile grise. Le mathématicien Luca de Pacioli (ca. 1445-1517) est considéré comme le fondateur de la comptabilité moderne. Collaborateur et ami de Léonard de Vinci et Piero della Francesca, Pacioli indique dans la préface qu'il publia cette nouvelle édition sur la demande de Léonard. La célèbre Divina Proportione vit le jour quelques semaines plus tard (voir n° 259). Le colophon est daté du 11 juin 1509 selon le calendrier julien (en vigueur jusqu'en 1582), ce qui correspond au 22 mai 1509 (comme décrit par Stanford). Philip Hofer nota à propos de cette édition: “One of the scarcest of all editions of Euclid which I have not had an opportunity of examining” (Bibliographical notes on the Works of Luca Pacioli, Fra Luca de Pacioli, Grolier Club, 1933). “In 1509 there had appeared also at Venice a very notable edition of the fifteen books of the Elements from the press of Paganinus de Paganinis... From the typographical point of view it is a very remarkable and attractive book. The title, in red and black, is admirably spaced. The text, which is not overloaded with commentary, fills only half the width of the page, the ample margin being occupied by the diagrams which are on an unusually large scale. In the Venetian Euclids of 1482, 1505, and 1509 the art of book production reached the meridian” (Thomas-Stanford). Non décrit par les bibliographes, on sait que deux tirages de la page de titre existent: il se distinguent par l'initiale “E” d'Euclide sur fond criblé tiré ou en rouge ou en noir. On remarque également un décalage dans le positionnement horizontal des caractères imprimés en rouge sur le titre. Le présent exemplaire correspond au tirage avec le “E” tiré en rouge. Exemplaire avec de belles marges, habilement lavé, titre réinséré au moment de la reliure et restauré, premier cahier avec petites taches et anciennes restaurations en marge blanche. Rare first edition of one of the rarest and most important early Euclids, prepared by Luca Pacioli and appearing within a month of the De Divina Proportione. As explained in the preface, the work was prepared at the behest of Leonardo da Vinci whom Pacioli knew. This copy with the hitherto undescribed variant on the title with the capital “E” printed in red.
