EUGÈNE ATGET Atget: Photographe de Paris . New York: E. Weyhe, 1930. Quarto (268 x 208 mm). 96 black and white photographs. Original burgundy cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt (cloth spine slightly dulled); original cardboard slipcase. Provenance : Richard L. Simon, publisher (typed letter signed from Crowninshield laid-in, dated 1946). FIRST EDITION, IN THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD SLIPCASE; Simon & Schuster publisher Richard Simon's copy, with a letter to him from Vanity Fair editor Frank Crowninshield relating to Atget's book. Simon and Crowninshield were both "vigorous champions of photography"; Simon published Margaret Bourke-White and Steichen's landmark The Family of Man , and suggested The Decisive Moment as the English title for Cartier-Bresson's Images à la sauvette ( Associations , p.46). Crowninshield's letter discusses the photograph on p.76 of this book, which shows the Paris shop owned by Simon's grandfather and at which Crowninshield's mother would shop. "An excellent selection, containing many wonderful pictures and giving exquisite visual pleasure" ( The Photobook ). Also published simultaneously in Paris and Leipzig.
