EUSTATHIUS (Archbishop of Thessalonica, latter half of 12th century). Commentarii in Homeri Iliadem et Odysseam , in Greek. Edited by Nicolaus Majoranus. Rome: Antonio Blado, 1542-50. 4 volumes, 2° (346 x 237mm). Roman, italic and two founts of Greek type. Blado device on titles of vols. I, III and IV, 3 text diagrams, 3 woodcut coats-of-arms in vol. IV. Initial spaces with guide-letters. Quire + is here bound at the front of vol. IV as often. (Without final blank in vol. II, repaired tear in title of vol. III, very occasional small stain, a few annotations washed.) UNCUT. Blue diced morocco, gilt monogram and motto ('Deus alit me') of Theodore Williams on sides, spines lettered in gilt, gilt shaped turn-ins, top edge gilt, by J. Clarke signed inside front board (scratch on rear cover of vol. IV). Provenance : The Reverend Theodore Williams. EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Homeric commentaries by 'the most learned man of his age' ( Oxford Companion to Classical Lit. ), printed together with the Iliad and the Odyssey . The commentaries deal with the history, geography, language, and mythology in the Homeric epics. Extracts from the commentaries had appeared in the Aldine Thesaurus Cornucopiae (1496, see lot 68). A new Greek type was designed by Joannes Honorius for Cardinal Marcello Cervini to print (uniquely) volumes II-IV (cf. A.
