Large collection of preliminary drawings of cover art and advertisements for Burt Britton's Self-Portrait.
Collection comprising: Three large studies intended for the cover of Self-Portrait ; three large drawings used for final advertisement; four drawings of the Strand Book Store ; one large finished drawing intended for use in final advertisement; nineteen micellaneous studies; [And:] Three self-portraits, including Britton, p. 232. mostly ink on paper, many with tissue overlays studies for cover are 19 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches (495 x 345 mm); drawings used for final advertisement are 23 7/8 x 17 7/8 inches (605 x 455 mm); drawings of the Strand are approximately 22 1/8 x 16 1/4 (560 x 410 mm); unfinished drawing intended for use in final advertisement is 23 1/2 x 22 1/4 inches (600 x 565 mm); nineteen studies are mostly 16 1/8 x 14 inches (420 x 355 mm); two self-portraits are approximately 10 x 7 inches (255 x 180 mm); third self portrait is 8 1/2 x 11 inches (215 x 280 mm). Everett Opie is an artist and cartoonist whose humorous cartoons done for The New Yorker in the 1970s are still popular today. In this group, Opie depicts the facade of the Strand on Lower Broadway in various states, capturing the book store's parties and passersby. He renders the great writers, artists, and entertainers that frequented the Strand during the 1970s, many of whom are featured in Burt Britton's Self-Portrait . In his self-portrait, Opie comically depicts himself as Harry Lime (Orson Welles from the 1949 film, The Third Man .
