The larger upper tracery designs show Hone's initial interest in using symbols of the Passion. The smaller lower designs depicting symbols associated with St. Peter's denial were those used in the final version. Hone initially received the order in the summer of 1948 as she was beginning work on the large east window for Eton College Chapel. Both churches had been damaged during the war and for both Hone designed Crucifixion scenes. The Downe window was completed in 1949 but not dedicated until October 1950. Hone was recommended for the commission by Robin Darwin Principal of the Royal College of Art and great-grandson of Charles Darwin. Dr Joseph McBrinn, November 2020
