Beschreibung:

Cenozoic Colombia, South America Copal and amber are fossilized tree resins. Some trees produce resins to help heal breaks and gashes in their bark. Occasionally insects become trapped in the sticky copal, are mummified (desiccated) and display amazing preservation of soft tissues, microscopic detail and, sometimes, even color. The age of copal or amber itself cannot be determined. Only the rock it is deposited in can be tested. Colombian copal is found mostly in the Andes Mountains in remote regions and has not been properly dated. The present clear honey-colored copal specimen has been polished on all sides, revealing hundreds of termites. It is thought to be the largest copal specimen with insect inclusions ever offered at auction. Weighing 4 1/2 lbs and measuring 18 1/2 X 7 1/2 X 1 1/4 in
