EXQUEMELIN, ALEXANDRE OLIVIER Bucaniers of America: Or, a true Account of the Most remarkable Assaults Committed of late years upon the Coasts of The West-Indies [--The Second Volume, Containing The Dangerous Voyage...of Captain Bartholomew Sharp...written by Mr. Basil Ringrose]. London: for William Crooke 1684-85. 2 vols. in one, 4to, red morocco, covers gilt-panelled, spine gilt, g.e., by Riviere, joints cracked, small repair to fol. N3, vol. 1, with partial loss of 5 words, the folding chart in vol. 2 heavily washed and with tears to an edge affecting the image, 8 headlines in vol. 2 shaved, washed, title of vol. 2 slightly discolored, a few marginal dampstains, light offsetting . FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF VOL. 1, FIRST EDITION OF VOL. 2, vol. 1 in 3 parts with 8 engraved portraits and plates (2 double-page), one double-page map, and 1 text engraving, vol. 2 with one folding engraved chart and 15 engraved maps and charts (14 full-page and one printed on a small folding inserted slip), 42 numerous coastal profiles in the text. "This work has been called the classic of buccaneering books. Exquemelin was an eyewitness of many of the events he so ably records. This work became the inspiration of a vast number of novels, plays, and imaginary voyages". (Hill, pp. 99-100). Sir Henry Morgan, one of the book's principal subjects, honored with a portrait and a plate depicting his destruction of the Spanish fleet, "sued the publisher, William Crook, for libel...and he was awarded #200 damages"--Borba de Moraes [1983], p. 300; Sabin 23479; Wing E 3894 and 3897; Church 689 ("The First Editions of both volumes are not often found bound together"). Sold not subject to return. Provenance : Etched bookplate of Samuel Wegg on inserted leaf (a pencilled note on front free endpaper identifies Wegg as Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company.
