Lot of 12 colored cabinet card photographs of Indians in their original F. Jay Haynes box. Images include Yellow Dog, Big Medicine Man, and Squaws; Yellow Dog; Chief Little Head; Running Deer; Big Medicine Man; Sitting Bull Jr.; Chief White Bull; Squaw Jessie Iron Bull; Rain in the Face; Chief Joseph; Sitting Bull, and Curley, Crow Indian Scout. The box has a rail car and F. Jay Haynes, Photographer, Fargo, - Dakota. Northern Pacific National Park Views and on a diagonal enclosing the text The Palace Studio will Visit all R.R. Towns in the Northwest. All cards with Haynes' logo at bottom recto and his Palace Studio Car logo on verso, with Branch Studio, Yellowstone Park. Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921) operated his Palace Studio Car on the Northern Pacific RR between 1885-1905. His North Dakota studio operated from 1879 to 1889, so these probably date between 1885-1889. He contracted with the railroad to provide them with publicity photographs (rolling stock, scenic views, etc.). He then befriended Philetus Norris, superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. Once the NPRR tracks came near the park, Haynes was granted a lease for a studio within the park, even though he had not yet visited. He stands out from earlier photographers of the West in his business acumen. The mechanics of photography were well established by the time F. Jay Haynes came on the scene, so he set about making it a profitable business. Condition: Box worn, slightly crushed. Probably missing end flap. Cards with very minor foxing and wear.
