Family Group: Pair: Gunner A. Anderton, Royal Artillery British War and Victory Medals (103377 Gnr. A. Anderton. R.A.), with named lid from card box of issue; Memorial Plaque (Albert Anderton), in card envelope, extremely fine Four: Captain G. E. Anderton, Pioneer Corps 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, in named card box of issue addressed to ‘Capt. G. E. Anderton, 20 Park Ave., Sharston, Manchester, Lancs.’, extremely fine (7) £180-220 Footnote Albert Anderton served pre-War with the Royal Artillery and, having been discharged to the Army Reserve, was recalled to the Colours on 4 July 1916. Posted to No. 387 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, Indian Expeditionary Force, he left behind at home in Manchester his wife Beatrice, who was expecting their first child, and sailed for the Middle East. He died of heat-stroke on active service on 22 August 1917, never seeing his son, and is buried in Basra War Cemetery, Iraq. Sold together with the recipient’s Notice of Call-up paper; Basra War Cemetery Roll of Honour book; Portrait photograph of the recipient; a photograph of his wife; and a letter written by the recipient to his wife Beatrice, date 5 August 1917, with transcript. George Edmund Anderton, the son of Albert and Beatrice Anderton, was born in Manchester, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps on 11 September 1943. He served with the Pioneer Corps during the Second World War, and was promoted temporary Captain on 10 January 1945. He relinquished his Commission in May 1946, and was granted the honorary rank of Captain. Sold together with the recipient’s Pioneer Corps cap badges; letter of authorisation for the Defence Medal, letter informing him of his appointment as Captain, and War Office enclosure on the him relinquishing his commission, dated 29 May 1946.
