Set of 51 views by Lynn C. Skeels (1871-1948) who made these views privately for Lowell C. Mason, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. Mason was a good friend of Clark Griffith, owner of the Washington Senators baseball team who set aside a group of box seats for the opening of the baseball season in 1945 and 1946. The event included a luncheon in the Senate dining room in the Capitol Building. Members of the Senate, House of Representatives, military leaders, high-ranking staff members and various VIPs were invited. Mason arranged for Skeels to photograph the event with his stereoscopic camera. Sets, numbering at about 50-views each were personally put together for the guests, many with paper labels on the versos personally titled by Mason which were printed after the event. Known by various names, the event was generally called "Lowell B. Mason's Baseball, Marching and Clam Chowder Eating Luncheon Club." At the Capitol dining room, the guests made bets on the outcome of the game and are seen in some of the views at the tote board. After the luncheon, the entire group of this all-boys club were chauffeured to Griffith Stadium. In 1945, Harry S. Truman, now President of the United States after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt just a few weeks before, was the honored member of the Club. At Griffith Stadium, the politicians sat above the Senator's dugout directly behind the President's flag-draped boxes. The players came into the stands to give autographs and to receive autographs from Truman and others. This set is a mix of views from the 1945 and 1946 event. The Washington Senators played the Boston Red Sox on opening day. In addition to Truman who is seen in 19 of the 51 views in this set, which was made especially for Senator White, are views of Admirals Leahy and Nimitz plus Truman's wife and daughter. Also there are two views of Ted Williams--one showing him running to first base and in the other standing in the outfield. The set includes 24 views of the luncheon (7 with Truman); 2 of the limos being loaded; 18 of the stands (12 with Truman) and 7 of baseball players. There are no two sets alike and the exact number of views made is hard to determine. The set is in a black book volume box marked "Lowell Mason's Annual Baseball Outing." Burchard has penned notations on many of the gray curved mount versos. He has misidentified Lowell Mason as Tom Clark who did look similar. Provenance: The Ed Burchard Stereoview Collection Condition: Overall bright and clear on clean mounts. A couple have minor flaws in the images, otherwise fine. The box is solid but rubbed with a partly separated spine.
