Original cloth-backed black and grey patterned boards, top edge stained blue; pictorial dust jacket featuring adaptation of Käthe Kollwitz theme (some rubbing to joints, some pale abrasions on front panel, otherwise bright, the spine unfaded); with plain glassine outer wrapper. Provenance : Stephen Roberts director of The Story of Temple Drake (according to the current owner, whose grandfather recorded the gift in his diary, stating that it and a copy of Sanctuary were both inscribed by Faulkner in Los Angeles for Roberts). FIRST EDITION OF FAULKNER'S FIRST GREAT NOVEL, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER on the title: "William Faulkner Los Angeles, Cal., 23 April 1936." In the earliest dust jacket with Maurice Hindus's Humanity Uprooted priced $3.00 on rear panel. The Sound and the Fury is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County and centers on the Compson family, former Southern aristocrats who are struggling with the dissolution of their family and its reputation. Published in 1929, Faulkner's fourth novel employs a number of narrative styles, including the technique known as stream-of-consciousness, pioneered by 20th-century European novelists such as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Although it was not immediately successful, it would eventually become Faulkner's most popular work. A VERY FINE COPY of one of the most original and influential novels in American literature, particularly scarce in this condition, with unfaded dust jacket spine. INSCRIBED COPIES OF 'THE SOUND AND THE FURY' ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: with none appearing at auction in at least 30 years, according to American Book Prices Current . According to the present owner, this copy was given to his grandfather by Stephen Roberts director of The Story of Temple Drake , the dramatization of Sanctuary . Massey 322; Petersen A6.2a.
