In the earliest dust jacket with Maurice Hindus's Humanity Uprooted priced $3.00 on rear panel. The Sound and the Fury is set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County and centers on the Compson family, former Southern aristocrats who are struggling with the dissolution of their family and its reputation. Published in 1929, Faulkner's fourth novel employs a number of narrative styles, including the technique known as stream-of-consciousness, pioneered by 20th-century European novelists such as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. Although it was not immediately successful, it would eventually become Faulkner's most popular work. A VERY FINE COPY of one of the most original and influential novels in American literature, particularly scarce in this condition, with unfaded dust jacket spine. INSCRIBED COPIES OF 'THE SOUND AND THE FURY' ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE: with none appearing at auction in at least 30 years, according to American Book Prices Current .
