"The Flag Raising on Iwo Jima" Statue. [Italy: 1945.] A cast metal small statue of the first Iwo Jima Monument, modelled on the famous "Raising of the Flag" photograph by Rosenthal, and built and erected in the Washington Mall in 1945. This model lettered "The Flag Raising on Iwo Jima" along one side, and "made in Italy" at one end and copyright "Felix W. De Weldon" at the other. Mounted on a wooden plinth, the plinth stamped "26/36," with a modern American flag. statue 78 x 215 x 165mm; base 110 x 250 x 50mm. Provenance: Felix de Weldon (retained in his studio): gift to his biographer, Rodney Hilton Brown [War Museum]. This statue, number 26 of 36 examples made with this wooden plinth, was cast in Italy in 1945, for Felix de Weldon, to be given as gifts to friends and to sell to raise funds for the large Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington.
