The connection between Charles Fellows, traveller and archaeologist, and Byron can be traced back to juvenile sketches made by the fourteen year-old Fellows of Newstead Abbey, which would be used 25 years later for the title-page of Thomas Moore's Life of Byron . Fellows passed the majority of the 1830s in Italy, Greece, and the Levant – making his name by his exploration of the ancient region of Lycia, where he journeyed in 1841 on behalf of the British Museum – with his interest in Byron never waning; indeed, his sketches reflect a pilgrimage of sorts, to the places named in Childe Harold .
