This album was formed in the 17th century by François Fossard, a musician, scribe and librarian in the musical library of KING LOUIS XIV. It includes three important suites, each with a manuscript sectional calligraphic title by Fossard: "Magnificences faites à la Cour de Florence pour le mariage de Cosme de Médices, Prince de Toscana avec Marie Magdeleine d'Autriche." 45 etchings by PH. THOMASSIN after JOSEPH ARPINAS. A fine series prepared for the wedding of COSIMO II DE' MEDICI to Archuduchess MARIA MAGDALENA of Austria. Included are 18 small vignettes of costumes and a grand naval battle on the Arno. This masque or pageant, called here a tournament, was held in honor of FERDINAND II DE' MEDICI, Grand Duke of Tuscany on 20 March 1628, the theme of which was the imprisonment of Cupid in Delos, from which he was eventually liberated by the champions of Diana and Venus.
