FÊTES -- "Album de Fêtes." An album of 167 etched and engraved plates of various fêtes collected by FRANÇOIS FOSSARD and later in the RUGGIERI COLLECTION, 1578-1670, each print mounted into a 2 o (552 x 408 mm) album. Provenance : François Fossard (1642-1702), musician and gardien of the music library of Louis XIV; E.F.D. Ruggieri, book collector and member of the Ruggieri family of pyrotechnic specialists.
FÊTES -- "Album de Fêtes." An album of 167 etched and engraved plates of various fêtes collected by FRANÇOIS FOSSARD and later in the RUGGIERI COLLECTION, 1578-1670, each print mounted into a 2 o (552 x 408 mm) album. Provenance : François Fossard (1642-1702), musician and gardien of the music library of Louis XIV; E.F.D. Ruggieri, book collector and member of the Ruggieri family of pyrotechnic specialists. This album was formed in the 17th century by François Fossard, a musician, scribe and librarian in the musical library of KING LOUIS XIV. It includes three important suites, each with a manuscript sectional calligraphic title by Fossard: "Magnificences faites à la Cour de Florence pour le mariage de Cosme de Médices, Prince de Toscana avec Marie Magdeleine d'Autriche." 45 etchings by PH. THOMASSIN after JOSEPH ARPINAS. A fine series prepared for the wedding of COSIMO II DE' MEDICI to Archuduchess MARIA MAGDALENA of Austria. Included are 18 small vignettes of costumes and a grand naval battle on the Arno. See Vinet 607. - Series of 17 engraved plates by REMIGIO CANTAGALLINA after GIULIO PARIGI of the marvelous "Battaglia Navale sull'Arno" with the ships of the Argonauti on the conquest of the golden fleece, after Parigi's designs for the wedding of Cosimo II de' Medici and Maria Magdalena of Austria. 1608. -- "L'Amouir prisonnier dans l'Ile de Délos. Caroussel orné de comparses et de différents quadrilles..." Bologna, 1628. 15 plates by SGIOVANNI BATTISTA CORIOLANO. This masque or pageant, called here a tournament, was held in honor of FERDINAND II DE' MEDICI, Grand Duke of Tuscany on 20 March 1628, the theme of which was the imprisonment of Cupid in Delos, from which he was eventually liberated by the champions of Diana and Venus. From: BISSARI. Fedra incoronata . Munich, 1662. The birth of the Bavarian Crown prince Max Emanuel (1662-1726), was celebrated by his parents FERDINAND MARIA Elector of Bavaria (1636-1679), and Henriette Adelaide (1636-1676) with an opera, a tournament and fireworks. (See lot 284). The album includes other views of entries, triumphal arches, fireworks, emblematic figures and ends with VOSMER, Michel. Principes Hollandaise et Zelandiae Domini Firsiae . Antwerp: C. Plantin for P. Gallé, 1578. Title and 31 hand-colored plates. Ruggieri 1167 (this album).
